The Tahuanía district is located in the Atalaya Province in the Ucayali region in eastern Peru . The district was established on July 2, 1943. It has an area of ​​7680 km². In the 2017 census, there were 8,264 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 5608, in 2007 it was 7284. The district administration is located in the small town of Bolognesi with 2155 inhabitants (as of 2017) at an altitude of about 200  m . Bolognesi is located on an eastern arm of the Río Ucayali , 80 km north-northwest of the provincial capital Atalaya . Bolognesi has an airfield. The area is populated by the indigenous people of the Shipibo-Conibo .

Geographical location

The Tahuanía district lies on the western edge of the Amazon basin . The Río Ucayali crosses the district in a northerly direction. In the west the mountain range of the Sira Mountains rises . The watershed to the Río Sheshea , which runs further north, forms the northern and northeastern district boundaries . The Río Tahuanía crosses the southeast and the Quebrada Genepanshea, both tributaries of the Río Ucayali, to the northeast.

The Tahuanía district borders in the west on the Puerto Bermúdez district ( Oxapampa province ), in the north and northeast on the Iparía district ( Coronel Portillo province ), in the far east on the Yurúa district and in the south on the Raimondi district .
