The district of Yurúa is located in the Atalaya Province in the Ucayali region in eastern Peru . The district was established on July 2, 1943. It has an area of ​​9027 km². At the 2017 census, 2435 residents lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 643, in 2007 it was 1631. The district administration is located in the village of Breu with 607 inhabitants at an altitude of 249  m (as of 2017). Breu is located on the banks of the Río Yurúa about 170 km northeast of the provincial capital Atalaya . Breu has an airfield. The area is populated by the indigenous people of the Asháninka and Yaminawá .

Geographical location

The district of Yurúa is located in the northeast of the Atalaya province. It extends over the upper catchment area of the Río Yurúa in the west of the Amazon basin . The district boundary runs along the watershed to the west, south and east . In the northeast, the course of the Río Breu forms the border from its source to its confluence with the Río Yurúa. From the confluence point, the border runs parallel to the latitudes to the west.

The district of Yurúa is bordered to the west by the districts of Masisea , Iparía and Tahuanía (the first two in the province of Coronel Portillo ), to the southwest by the district of Raimondi , to the south-east by the district of Purús ( province of Purús ) and to the north-east and north by the Brazilian state of Acre with the municipalities of Feijó , Jordão and Marechal Thaumaturgo .
