Jordão , officially Portuguese Município de Jordão , is a small town in the Brazilian state of Acre with an estimated population of 8,317 as of July 2019. The municipality, which is very large for the population, borders Peru in the south , but is only a border area. It contains 10 Terras indigenous around 32 indigenous forest villages (Aldeias) and comprises about 62% of the Nutzreservates Reserve extrativista do Alto Tarauacá . The place can be reached by river and air traffic.

Toponymy

Jordão means Jordan , although it is not certain whether the name was derived from the river Jordan or a person of that name.

Jordão is located in the extreme west of Brazil in the Amazon rainforest at an altitude of 278 m. With an area of ​​5,357.3 km², the population density is 1.2 inhabitants per km². Next to the main town are small settlements along the rivers.

To the north lies the municipality of Tarauacá , to the west of Marechal Thaumaturgo and to the east of Feijó .

history

Jordão's territory is a traditional settlement area of ​​various tribes of the indigenous population. a. Rubber collectors invaded the area and built the Seringal Duas Nações , a plantation at the time of the rubber boom . The area was subject to the city of Tarauacá and formed a district there, the distrito de Jordão . In 1956 the village was elevated to Vila Jordão and after a referendum by State Law No. 1.034 of April 28, 1992, it became a Munizip as Município de Jordão . The municipality was changed again in December 1992, the place was spun off from Tarauacá, so that the city administration could come into force on January 1, 1993. Hilário de Holanda Melo was elected as the first city prefect (mayor). Jordão is the seat of the only district of the same name.

According to the 2010 IBGE census, the population was 6,577. The number was estimated by the IBGE as of July 1, 2019 at 8,317 residents.

In 1991 it was distributed among 127 inhabitants in the urban area and 4121 in the rural area, whereas in 2010 it was distributed to 2,272 people in the populated local area and to 5305 people in the extensive rural and forest areas.

economy

Together with the surrounding municipalities of Feijó and Tarauacá , it formed the statistical-geographical microregion Tarauacá , one of the two microregions of the former mesoregion Vale do Juruá , from 1989 to 2017 . These are not regional authorities, but the municipalities, similar to the German district associations, can join forces to pursue common purposes.

Infrastructure
