In the 1970s, government resettlement programs increased the population from southeastern Brazil to the north. The establishment of new cities in Acre is closely linked to the drive for autonomy, Acre became a federal state, and on May 14, 1963 the city received the status of Município de Senador Guiomard with self-government.
