Porto Walter , officially Município de Porto Walter , also spelled Porto Valter, is a small town in the Brazilian state of Acre . It is 574 km away from the state capital of Rio Branco . The population was estimated at 11,982 inhabitants in 2019, called the Portowaltensians. One of the few German colonies in northern Brazil had settled in Porto Walter.

Porto Walter is located on the left bank of the Rio Juruá opposite the mouth of the Rio Humaitá . The landscape and climate are those of the Amazon rainforest . In the north it borders on Cruzeiro do Sul , in the south on Marechal Thaumaturgo , in the east on Tarauacá and in the west on Peru and forms a green border there .

history

The territory of Porto Walter is the traditional indigenous settlement area of ​​Arara, Nawas (Náuas), Amoaças, Asháninkas (Kampas), Kulinas (Culinas) and Catianos, some of which today belong to the isolated peoples. At the end of the 19th century rubber tappers (seringueiros) settled there to collect rubber, the main product of the region. Alternately, the area belonged as the district Humaitá (distrito) to the cities Juruá, then Cruzeiro do Sul. In 1960, the Humaitá district was divided into the Porto Walter district , spun off on April 25, 1992 and raised to a self-governing Munizip as Município de Porto Walter . The place is named after an early resident named Walter de Carvalho.

After the local elections in 2016, José Estephan Barary Filho (Zezinho Barbary) from the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB) is the city ​​prefect (mayor) with 3,091 votes .

According to the 2010 IBGE census, the population was 9,176. The number was estimated by the IBGE as of July 1, 2019 at 11,982 residents.

In 1991 it was distributed among 797 inhabitants (12.18%) in urban areas and 5749 inhabitants (87.82%) in rural areas, whereas in 2010 it was distributed among 3323 people (36.21%) in urban areas and growing less 5853 people (63.79%) in extensive rural and forest areas.

The largest religious community is formed by the supporters of the Roman Catholic Church in Brazil , followed by supporters of the Evangelical-Protestant faith. Porto Walter belongs to the Diocese of Cruzeiro do Sul .
