Plácido de Castro , officially Portuguese Município de Plácido de Castro , is a small town in the east of the Brazilian state of Acre . The distance to its capital Rio Branco is 100 km. The population was estimated at 19,761 inhabitants in 2019, called Placidianos.
geography
It borders Bolivia to the south, Senador Guiomard to the north, Acrelândia to the east, Capixaba to the west and Rio Branco to the northwest. The area is 1,943.245 km² (as of 2015) and has a population density of 8.9 people per km².
The Río Abuná forms the border river to Bolivia in the east, and further east the area merges into the Beni lowland plain in Bolivia. In addition, in Plácido there are the Igarapé Rapirrã , Igarapé Visionário , Igarapé Santa Helena and Igarapé São Raimundo .
history
Plácido de Castro emerged from a settlement of rubber tappers, which was called Vila de Pacatuba from 1922 and was administered by Rio Branco. In 1963 Acre became a federal state, which was also connected with internal territorial reforms. On March 10, 1963 the district of Plácido de Castro was spun off from Rio Branco and raised to the self-governing Munizip Munícipio de Plácido de Castro . The place was named after the major, leader of the Acrean Revolution and president from 1900 to 1903 of the self- proclaimed republic Acre José Plácido de Castro (1873-1908).
City administration
City prefect (mayor) is Gedeon Sousa Barros of the Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB) after the local elections in 2016 for the term of office from 2017 to 2020 , which prevailed with 4,864 votes. The legislature lies with the Câmara Municipal, the city council, made up of eleven elected representatives.
With the cities of Acrelândia , Bujari , Capixaba , Porto Acre , Rio Branco and Senador Guiomard , it formed the micro-region Rio Branco from 1989 to 2017 , which in turn formed the mesoregion Vale do Acre with the two micro-regions Brasileia and Sena Madureira . These regions serve geographical, statistical and planning purposes.
population
According to the 2010 IBGE census, the population was 17,209. The number was estimated by the IBGE as of July 1, 2019 at 19,761 residents.
In 1991 it was distributed to 4,332 inhabitants in urban areas and 6,836 inhabitants in rural areas, in contrast to 10,382 people in populated local areas and 6,827 people in rural areas in 2010.

Infrastructure

The AC-040 road connects to Capixaba, the AC-465 to the west and the AC-475 to the north lead to the diagonal BR-364 , the main road in Acre. It leads west to Peru , north via Acrelândia with a customs post to Rondônia and from there further southeast to São Paulo .
The closest international airport is Aeroporto Internacional de Rio Branco .

Plâcido de Castro had an illiteracy rate of 43.3% in 1991 , which had already fallen to 23.6% in the 2010 census.
