Rio Branco (German White River ; officially Portuguese Município de Rio Branco ) is the capital and largest city of the Brazilian state of Acre .
Rio Branco was founded on December 28, 1882. About half of the population of Acres, called Rio-Branquenser or Acres, live in it. The city is the main starting point for tourists visiting Acre. The city is divided into two halves by the Rio Acre river , into the first and second districts, which in turn are divided into about 110 districts or neighborhoods, the bairros .
According to the 2010 census, the city had 336,038 inhabitants. As of June 1, 2019, the number was officially estimated to grow to 407,319 inhabitants.
City administration
Executive: In the local elections in 2016, Marcus Alexandre was elected city prefect (mayor), who stood for the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT). He left office as he was applying for state governor in 2018. On April 6, 2018, Socorro Neri des Partido Socialista Brasileiro (PSB) became the new mayor. The legislature rests with a city council (Câmara Municipal) made up of 17 elected city councilors (vereadores).
In 2017, the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística changed the assignment to geostatistical regions and assigned the municipality to the Região geográfica imediata Rio Branco and the Região geográfica intermediária Rio Branco .

Diocese of Rio Branco
The Roman Catholic diocese of Rio Branco was established on October 4, 1919 as the Territorial Prelature Acre e Purus in Rio Branco. In 1986 it was raised to the status of a diocese and received its current name.
