history

The founding year of the city is either 1158 or 1159, when Galitsch was laid out according to documents by the Grand Duke and Moscow founder Yuri Dolgoruki . Named the city, as well as a number of other ancient cities in central Russia , after a city from the early days of the early medieval Kievan Rus , after today for Ukraine belonging Halych .

In 1246, Galitsch was mentioned in Russian documents as the capital of an independent principality, which was then ruled by a brother of the national hero Alexander Nevsky . In 1363 the principality lost its independence and was annexed to the Grand Duchy of Moscow . Because of the ongoing wars between the principalities, Moscow used Galitsch as a fortress in the 15th century, for which purpose defensive structures with an earth wall were built on a hill in the area of today's city. After decades of sieges and battles, Galitsch finally went to the Moscow Grand Duchy in 1450, which now united all Russian principalities. Some remains of the former fortifications have been preserved in Galitsch to this day.

In the 16th century , the trade in grain and furs flourished in Galitsch, which was on a road to the port city of Arkhangelsk . In 1609 the place was attacked and destroyed by Polish-Lithuanian troops during the Smuta . Thanks to its favorable geographical location, Galitsch was able to regain its importance for trade in the 17th century. In 1778 it received city rights as the district center of the Kostroma governorate . However, Galitsch lost its previous economic importance towards the end of the 18th century.

In the 19th century, Galitsch was essentially built according to a general plan from the 1770s, which is partly reflected in the city's architecture to this day. During the Soviet era , larger industrial companies were built here, with Galitsch at times belonging to the so-called Ivanovo industrial district .
