history
In 1439 the monk Makarios (Russian Макарий / Makari; 1349–1444), who later canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church as a miracle worker , founded a hermitage on the Unscha , which later became an important monastery (had from the 17th century to 1929 the status of a lavra ).
A trading settlement (Sloboda) Makarjewskaja was built around the monastery . This received the city charter in 1778 under the name Makarjew-na-Unsche ( Makarjew an der Unscha ) to avoid confusion with the place of the same name on the Volga (today Makarjewo , Nizhny Novgorod Oblast ). Makarios had also founded a monastery there in 1435.
In the 19th century, the city was known for its three annual markets: the Epiphany Market in winter, the Annunciation Market in spring and the Elijah Market in summer.
Since the end of the 19th century the city has only been called Makarjew .
