Krasnoye on the Volga ( Russian Красное-на-Волге / Krasnoye-na-Wolge) is an urban-type settlement in Russia, about 70 km down the Volga from the Oblast capital Kostroma . It has 7706 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
history
According to legend, the city is called Krasnoye (dt. Red ) because after a battle against the Tatars the earth was so soaked with blood that the ground was red. It is more likely that the name comes from the older meaning of the word ( beautiful ).
In the 16th century Krasnoye was owned by Boris Godunov , later by the Romanovs and the Vyazemskis .
Since 17./18. Century the place is a center of the jewelery art. The icon frames and book covers, jewelry and crockery produced here were mainly known in eastern countries. Since the 19th century, handicrafts and cheaper mass-produced jewelery have been made here. The largest local jewelry factory, the Krasnoselski juwelirny sawod , reduced its employees by around half after the collapse of the Soviet Union , but it is still the largest employer in the region. In addition, numerous small and medium-sized precious metal processing companies have developed here in recent years.
In addition to these, the Kuchom , the Krasnoselsk educational institution for artistic metalworking, is a magnet for goldsmiths.
In addition to exhibitions of jewelery work, the tent-shaped Epiphany Church, built in 1592, is particularly interesting for tourists .
