Since the end of the 1950s, Soligalitsch has been connected to the so-called Monsa Railway ( Монзенская железная дорога / Monsenskaja schelesnaja doroga; named after the Monsa , a tributary of the Kostroma), via a branch line. This line was built in the 1930s for the forestry development of the border area of the Oblasts Vologda and Kostroma. This begins in Wochtoga on the Vologda - Bui route and reached the Kema River about 50 kilometers west of Nikolsk in the late 1980s . With a length of 238 kilometers as the main branch, it is one of the most important non-public industrial railways in Russia.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1335 as Sol Galitskaja in a document by Ivan Kalita . The name is derived from sol , the Russian word for salt , and the name of the older town of Galitsch about 80 kilometers south, meaning Galitsch salt and refers to the local rock salt deposits from which brine springs emerge here .

Initially belonging to the independent Principality of Galitsch, the place finally came to the Grand Duchy of Moscow in 1450 . Until the 17th century it remained an important center of the salt works, which was now owned by the Sergios-Dreifaltigkeits- and five other monasteries.

Fortifications were built in the 15th century that withstood a siege by the Tatars in 1532 .

During the time of turmoil , Soligalitsch was the seat of a voivode in 1609 , destroyed by Polish troops and in 1649 by a city fire.

In 1778 the place received city rights as the administrative center of a district ( Ujesds ) of the Kostroma governorate . In 1808 another fire destroyed almost the entire city. In 1823 the salt works was closed and the town developed into a center of wood tar production and blacksmithing over the course of the century .
