Neja ( Russian Нея ) is a small town with 9827 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in Russia in the Kostroma Oblast on the river of the same name . It is located 237 km northeast of the regional capital Kostroma . The nearest town is Makarev , which is around 50 km from Neja.
history
There is evidence that the first settlements near the present-day city existed at the beginning of the 16th century. For the hydronym Neja a Finno-Ugric origin from the time before the 9th century is assumed. From the middle of the 16th century at the latest, a trade route ran through the Neja area, which favored settlements all around.
At the beginning of the 20th century, during the period of intensive railway construction in the Russian Empire , the Vologda - Vjatka line was relocated, which today belongs to a section of the European part of the Trans-Siberian Mainline . A small station was built near the Neja River in 1906. The now favorable traffic connection favored the trade in this area. As early as 1905, an English entrepreneur opened a wood factory near the station. Over the next few decades, the station settlement became a place with over 1000 inhabitants.
In 1929 the Neja Rajon was formed and the Neja settlement was declared its administrative center. In 1958 it received city status.
