Volgoretschensk ( Russian Волгореченск ) is a city in Kostroma Oblast ( Russia ) with 17,104 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located about 40 km southeast of the oblast capital Kostroma on the right bank of the Volga , at the confluence of its tributary Shacha .
Volgoretschensk forms an independent urban district .
The city is the end of a 30-kilometer railway line (freight traffic only) that branches off from the Yaroslavl - Ivanovo line at Furmanow . The Kostroma – Ivanovo road also runs through the city.
history
Volgoretschensk was established in 1964 as an urban-type settlement in connection with the construction of a thermal power plant and was granted town charter on June 16, 1994.
The name refers to the Volga and the Russian word reka for river , means as about Volga river city .

economy
The town-building company is the Kostromaer Thermal Power Plant (Russian : Костромская ГРЭС / Kostromskaja GRES) belonging to OGK-3 with an output of 3600 megawatts . There is also a pipe works and construction companies. In 2012, National Oilwell Varco decided to set up a factory for drilling rigs and oil field equipment in Volgorechensk.
