Heinrich Meibom (medical doctor)
Heinrich Meibom (born June 29, 1638 in Lübeck , † March 26, 1700 in Helmstedt ) was a German doctor , professor of medicine, historian and scholar.
Life
Heinrich Meibom (the younger) came from the old Lower Saxon family Meibom and was a son of the doctor Johann Heinrich Meibom (1590–1655) and grandson of the poet Heinrich Meibom (the elder) . He had initially received private lessons and attended school in Lübeck. In 1655 he began studying at the University of Helmstedt , where he attended the lectures of Georg Calixt. In 1658 he decided to study medicine, to which he mainly listened to Tappen, Conring and Vogler. In 1659 he continued his studies in Holland; he attended the University of Groningen and the University of Leiden .
After returning to his homeland, he was appointed associate professor of medicine in Helmstedt in 1661 and then went on scientific trips to Italy, France and England. In 1663 he obtained his doctorate in Angers (France). It was not until 1664 that he took up his extraordinary professorship in Helmstedt. The following year he was promoted to full professor. In 1678 he also became a professor of history and poetry. He held these positions until his death in 1700. He had also participated in the organizational tasks of the Helmstedt University. He was dean of the medical faculty twelve times and vice-rector of the alma mater seven times. He was buried in the Stephanikirche in Helmstedt, where his tombstone is preserved.

Meibom married Anna Sophia (born July 9, 1640 in Hanover (Hildesheim), † August 3, 1727 in Helmstedt) on August 30, 1664 in Wolfenbüttel, the daughter of the Brunswick court preacher Brandanus Daetrius (June 4, 1607 in Hamburg; † November 22, 1688 in Wolfenbüttel) and his first wife Elisabeth, the daughter of the councilor in Helmstedt Heinrich Grobbecke and his wife Magaretha Frölich. His son Brandanus Meibom (1678-1740) became professor of pathology , semiotics , botany and medicine. There were seven sons and three daughters from the marriage. Of the children are known:

Works
Meibom wrote about 57 medical treatises. Heinrich Meibom is known for his discovery, named after him, of the sebum glands in the eyelids , the Meibomian glands .
In addition, Heinrich Meibom wrote Latin poems, which he published as " Rerum germanicarum scriptores " in 1688 with the works of his grandfather Heinrich Meibom ( Parodiarum horatianarum libri III et sylvarum libri II , 1588) .
