Heinrich Meibom also Heinrich Meibom the Elder (born December 4, 1555 in Alverdissen , † September 20, 1625 in Helmstedt ) was a German historian and poet .

Life

Coming from the old Lower Saxon sex Meibom , he studied at the University of Helmstedt and was appointed professor of poetry and history there in 1583. He held the chair until his death. His scientific activity was not limited to the history of the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg , but increasingly focused on the historical analysis of medieval Germany. His work was particularly valued and promoted by Emperor Rudolf II . It was also Rudolf II who crowned him Poeta Laureate on July 9, 1590 and, according to tradition , elevated him to hereditary nobility . This nobility was confirmed and renewed to its descendants as imperial nobility in 1755.

Works

His works Parodiarum horatianarum libri III et sylvarum libri II (1588) and Opuscula historica ad res germanicas spectantia were published by his grandson of the same name Heinrich Meibom in 1688 as Rerum germanicarum scriptores .
