life and work

Fritz Roth came from an entrepreneurial family in the Thuringian Vogtland , which came from the Magdeburg area at the end of the 17th century. He passed his Abitur with distinction and studied law in Leipzig and Munich as well as business administration in Berlin and Leipzig. In his diploma thesis he dealt with advertising theory. A planned doctorate was prevented in 1927 by the death of his father. A business graduate by profession , he was the owner and manager of the family business founded in 1827, a soap factory in Zeulenroda in Thuringia. After the expropriation by the GDR in 1950, he settled in Boppard on the Rhine.

Since then, Roth has devoted almost all of his creative energy to his ten-volume work Restlose Evaluations of funeral sermons and personal publications for genealogical and cultural-historical purposes , which was self-published from 1959 to 1980. In 1962 he suggested the establishment of a working group for Central German family research and was its first chairman. In 1972 he became an honorary member of this study group. He also dealt with the origins and descendants of Martin Luther .

In 1981 Roth was awarded the Medal of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Johann Christoph Gatterer Medal of the Genealogical-Heraldic Society of Göttingen for his services to family and cultural history research.
