Location of the Kostroma (Кострома) in the catchment area of the Volga |
||
The Kostroma ( Russian Кострома ) is a left tributary of the Volga in the European part of Russia .
It rises east of Soligalitsch in the village of Knjadschewo ( Kostroma Oblast ) on the Galitscher Heights . Its upper course is still very narrow and curvy , but due to the numerous tributaries, its width soon increases to 30–40 m. The Kostroma is navigable from Bui , the second largest city on the river.
The Kostroma is mainly fed by the snowmelt , here the runoff increases to values of up to 1600 m³ / s. To protect against flooding , dams were built on the lower reaches . For the last 50 km before the estuary, the Kostroma marks the border between the Kostroma Oblast and the Yaroslavl Oblast .
Before the construction of the Gorkier reservoir , it flowed into the Volga at the Ipatios monastery within the city of Kostroma . When the Volga was dammed, it lost the tributaries Sot and Mesa , which now flow directly into the reservoir.
