Feijó , officially Portuguese Município de Feijó , is a medium- sized town in the Brazilian state of Acre with around 34,700 inhabitants, called Feijoens. It is the fifth largest city in Acre in terms of population and one of the largest municipalities in Brazil with an area of 27,975 km². It is around 344 km as the crow flies (road: 366 km) west of the capital Rio Branco . It borders Peru in the south and the Amazon state in the north .
Toponymy
The city was named after the priest, statesman and regent of the Brazilian Empire, Diogo Antônio Feijó .
geography
Acre is part of the Amazon region , the height is given as 153 m above sea level, the climate is tropical-equatorial of the climate type Af according to the climate classification of Köppen and Geiger .
Feijó is located on the left bank of a river bend of the strongly meandering Rio Envira , but is not itself a distinct inland port. With an area of 27,975 km² (as of 2017), it is very sparsely populated with around 1 person per km². Surrounding municipalities are Santa Rosa do Purus and Manoel Urbano in the east and Tarauacá and Jordão in the west.
history
Today's area of Feijó is a traditional settlement area of various tribes of the indigenous population, especially the Yaminawás (Jaminawás and Jaminawás / Envira), Kaxinawás (kaxinauwás) and Chacauwás. Rubber tappers, the seringueros , nut collectors, gold prospectors and other adventurers penetrated the Indian region from the northeast and Amazonia ; from the middle of the 19th century there were also expeditions that set up supply posts. This is how the source of the Rio Envira was researched (1879). From the middle of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, the rubber boom was important for the development of settlers. On May 13, 1906, the primeval forest village built by rubber plantation owners, including those of the Seringal Porto Alegre, and rubber tappers who had become resident, was raised to a vila under the name Vila de Feijó . It was under Seabra, today's Tarauacá, and was spun off in 1938 when it was given the status and name of Município de Feijó . Epaminondas Martins , federal intervener for Acre at the time of the Estado Novo des Getúlio Vargas , appointed Raimundo Augusto de Araújo as the first city prefect by decree No. 968 of December 21, 1938. Both dates, 1906 and 1938, are also considered the date of the city's foundation.
City administration
The executive branch for the 2017 to 2020 term of office lies with Kiefer Cavalcante des Partido Progressista (PP), who was successful in the 2016 local elections as city prefect (mayor) with 6558 votes . He was able to prevail against his predecessor "Mêrla" Hammerly da Silva Albuquerque from the labor party Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT), who received only 4,532 votes. One of the urban tasks with the construction project Ruas do Povo is the expansion of previously unpaved roads.
The legislature rests with the Câmara Municipal (City Council), its President and the city councilors.
The municipality forms only one district with Feijó as its seat, there are also settlements such as Ajubim, Bom Sucesso, Califórnia, Foz do Jurupari, Porto Brasil and Porto Rubim. The settlements are all along the rivers.
population
The population was according to the census of the IBGE of 2010 32.412 inhabitants . The number was estimated by the IBGE as of July 1, 2019 at 34,780 residents. Around 40% of the population is under 15 years of age.
It is divided roughly equally between the actual local area and the rural area.
