The Elsengrund settlement is a listed garden suburb in the Berlin district of Köpenick in the Treptow-Köpenick district . It is part of the Märchenviertel and is located northeast of the Köpenick S-Bahn station .

history

The Elsengrund settlement was created between 1918 and 1925 as a result of the cooperation between the housing association and the then independent city of Cöpenick. The housing association at the time made the building site available at a low price of around one mark per square meter in order to then sell it on to the city. The non-profit settlement company was the client and commissioned the Berlinische Boden-Gesellschaft (BBG) with planning and construction . The architect Otto Rudolf Salvisberg was commissioned to develop the overall concept of the garden city.

Between 1919 and 1921 the houses in the triangle between Essenplatz / Stellingdamm, Wolfsgartenstraße and Janitzkystraße were built in the first and second construction phases. The last two construction phases were completed by 1925 in the area of Waldburgsweg and Heidekrugstraße, Schmausstraße and Uhlenhorster Straße. Otto Rudolf Salvisberg designed six single-family house types , all of which, with the exception of the house type three, are located on Uhlenhorster Strasse and have two floors. The houses are between 61 and 116 m² in size, have a basement and are equipped with a heated attic. The kitchen is on the ground floor and one or two rooms, depending on the type of house. Depending on the type of house, there are two or three rooms next to the bathroom on the first floor. The houses are characterized by hipped roofs, which in their original state were covered with Berlin plain tile roofing tiles . The house walls were made of gravel plaster , the wooden windows and doors were designed individually. The additional rooms or garage have been redesigned over time.

In June 1933, National Socialists , 23 trade unionists, KPD and SPD members and non-party members lived in the settlement , including Erich Janitzky , Götz Kilian , Paul von Essen , Johann Schmaus and his son Anton Schmaus, as well as the Reichstag member Johannes Stelling . After the Second World War , the streets of the settlement were given names of the victims and plaques were put up to commemorate them. Despite the difficult supply situation in the GDR with building materials, the settlement was declared a monument in 1977 in order to secure the building's preservation. Since 1990 the association has been supporting citizens for the Märchenviertel and Elsengrund e. V. the settlement by promoting monument preservation.
