The Atalaya Province is located in the Ucayali region in eastern Peru . It was founded on June 1, 1982. The province has an area of 38,924 km². At the 2017 census, 49,324 people lived in the province. Ten years earlier the population was 43,933. The administrative seat is the city of Atalaya on the west bank of the Río Ucayali .
Geographical location
The Atalaya Province extends over the Amazon lowlands. It has a longitudinal extent in north-south and west-east directions of about 200 km. The province extends in the west to the Sira Mountains . The Río Ucayali, whose right source river Río Urubamba , and the Río Yurúa flow through the province in a northerly direction.
The province of Atalaya borders in the northeast on Brazil , in the east on the province Purús , in the southeast on the Madre de Dios region , in the south on the Cusco region , in the southwest on the Junín region , in the west on the Pasco region and in the north on the Coronel Portillo Province .

The Atalaya Province is divided into the following four districts. The Raimondi district is the seat of the provincial administration.
