The Atalaya Province is located in the Ucayali region in eastern Peru . It was founded on June 1, 1982. The province has an area of ​​38,924 km². At the 2017 census, 49,324 people lived in the province. Ten years earlier the population was 43,933. The administrative seat is the city ​​of Atalaya on the west bank of the Río Ucayali .

Geographical location

The Atalaya Province extends over the Amazon lowlands. It has a longitudinal extent in north-south and west-east directions of about 200 km. The province extends in the west to the Sira Mountains . The Río Ucayali, whose right source river Río Urubamba , and the Río Yurúa flow through the province in a northerly direction.

The province of Atalaya borders in the northeast on Brazil , in the east on the province Purús , in the southeast on the Madre de Dios region , in the south on the Cusco region , in the southwest on the Junín region , in the west on the Pasco region and in the north on the Coronel Portillo Province .
