The Tambopata District is located in the Tambopata Province in the Madre de Dios region in southeastern Peru . The district founded on December 26, 1912 has an area of ​​20,690 km². At the 2017 census, 81,925 people lived in the district. In 2007 the population was 60,214. The district administration is located in the 186  m high provincial and regional capital Puerto Maldonado with 77,221 inhabitants (as of 2017). Puerto Maldonado is located on the south bank of the east-flowing Río Madre de Dios above the confluence of the Río Tambopata .

Geographical location

The Tambopata district extends across the WNW-OSE direction through the Madre de Dios region. It has a length of about 400 km. The Río Madre de Dios crosses the district in an easterly direction and divides it into a north-western and a south-eastern part. The rivers Río Las Piedras and Río Los Amigos limit the north-western district area to the north and south. The rivers Río Tambopata and Río Heath limit the southeastern district area to the west and east. The district is located in the Amazon basin . In the extreme south the district extends to the foot of the Voranden. In the far northwest lies the Alto Purús National Park , in the southeast the Tambopata National Reserve .

The Tambopata district borders in the far west on the Sepahua district ( Atalaya province , Ucayali region ), in the north on the Iñapari ( Tahuamanu province ) and Las Piedras districts , in the southeast on Bolivia , in the south on the San Pedro de Putina Punco district ( province Sandia ) and in the southwest to the districts of Inambari , Laberinto , Madre de Dios and Fitzcarrald (the last two in the province of Manu ).
