The province of Tambopata is located in the Madre de Dios region in southeastern Peru . The province has an area of 36,268 km². At the 2017 census, 111,474 people lived in the province. In 1993 the population was 46,738, in 2007 78,523. The administrative seat is the city of Puerto Maldonado . In the southeast of the province is the Tambopata National Reserve, in the west of the province is the Alto Purus National Park .
Geographical location
The province of Tambopata is centrally located in the Madre de Dios region in the Amazon lowlands . It has a lengthwise extension in WNW-ESE direction of about 410 km. The Río de Las Piedras flows through the northwest of the province, the Río Madre de Dios , the Río Inambari and the Río Tambopata flow through the southeast of the province. The Río Heath runs along the southeastern border .
The province of Tambopata borders in the north with the province Tahuamanu , in the east with Bolivia , in the south with the region Puno , in the southwest with the province Manu and in the far west with the region Ucayali .
Administrative division
The Tambopata Province is divided into four districts. The district of Tambopata is the seat of the provincial administration.
