The Madre de Dios district is located in the Manu Province in the Madre de Dios region in southeastern Peru . The district was established on December 26, 1912. It extends over an area of 7846 km². The 2017 census counted 7,301 inhabitants. In 2007 the population was 9,404. The district administration is located in the 240 m high small town of Boca Colorado with 2357 inhabitants (as of 2017). Boca Colorado is located near the confluence of the Río Colorado in the Río Madre de Dios 107 km east-northeast of the provincial capital Salvación .
Geographical location
The Madre de Dios district is located in the northeast of the Manu Province. The Río Madre de Dios crosses the district in an east-southeast direction. The Río Los Amigos runs along the northern district border, the Río Blanco along the southwestern district border. In the south the district extends to the foothills of the Cordillera Carabaya .
The Madre de Dios district borders in the southwest on the Manu district , in the west on the Fitzcarrald district , in the north on the Laberinto district ( Tambopata province ), in the east on the Inambari district (Tambopata province), in the southeast on the Huepetuhe district and in the South to the Camanti District ( Quispicanchi Province ) and Kosñipata District ( Paucartambo Province ).
