Camisea gas project

The Camisea project for natural gas production is one of the largest gas production projects in Peru. Production started in 2004 after the completion of the gas pipeline ( Gasoducto de Camisea ) to the Conchan refinery in the Lurín district on the coast, which was built between 2001 and 2004 . The gas from the province of La Convención is partly used to supply the Lima metropolitan region ( Área Metropolitana de Lima ), and partly it is exported.

Hostage taken in 2012

In April 2012, the province of La Convención hit the international media because around 40 employees of the Camisea consortium were presumably kidnapped by supporters of the Sendero Luminoso guerrilla . Due to military pressure, the kidnappers released their hostages a few days later.
