The Vilcabamba district is located in the La Convención province of the Cusco region in south-central Peru . The district founded on January 2, 1857 has an area of ​​2328 km². On November 19, 2014, the extreme southwest was spun off as Inkawasi District . At the 2017 census, there were 10,944 residents in the district. The district administration is located in Pucyura . In the district there are several important archaeological sites from the Inca period such as Espíritu Pampa and Vitcos .

Geographical location

The district is located in the south of the province of La Convención, about 110 km west-northwest of the regional capital Cusco . The glaciated Cordillera Vilcabamba mountain range crosses the south of the district. The rivers Río Vilcabamba and Río Cushireni drain the main part of the district to the east and north to the Río Urubamba, respectively . The Río Apurímac runs in the extreme south and west .

The district is bordered to the northwest and north by the district Echarati , on the north by the district of Santa Ana , in the south on the districts of Santa Teresa , Huanipaca ( province Abancay ) and Inkawasi and in the west to the districts Chungui ( province of La Mar ) and Villa Virgen .
