The province of La Mar belongs to the Ayacucho administrative region in south-central Peru . It has an area of 4392 km². The 2017 census counted 76,453 inhabitants in the province. In 1993 the population was 70,018, in 2007 84,177. The administrative seat is in San Miguel .
Geographical location
The province of La Mar is located in the northeast of the Ayacucho region. It extends over the Peruvian Central Cordillera . The rivers Río Piene , Río Apurímac and Río Pampas form the provincial borders in the northwest, east and south. In the west of the province lies the river valley of the Río Torobamba , a left tributary of the Río Pampas. The provincial capital is located there.
The province of La Mar borders the neighboring provinces of Huanta and Huamanga in the west . To the east, across the Río Apurímac, lies the Cusco region , to the south, across the Río Pampas, the Apurímac region .

The province of La Mar consists of 11 districts. The district of San Miguel is the seat of the provincial administration.
