The district of Ayna is located in the province of La Mar in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was established on January 17, 1945. It has an area of ​​285 km². The 2017 census counted 10,038 residents. In 1993 the population was 8607, in 2007 it was 10,196. The district administration is located in the small town of San Francisco, 610  m high on the Río Apurímac, with 5384 inhabitants (as of 2017). San Francisco is located 48 km northeast of the provincial capital San Miguel . A road bridge leads to the town of Kimbiri on the opposite bank of the river .

Geographical location

The district of Ayna is located in the Peruvian Central Cordillera in the extreme north of the province of La Mar. The district is bordered in the northwest by the Río Piene and in the northeast by the Río Apurímac.

The district of Ayna is bordered to the southeast by the district of Santa Rosa , to the southwest by the district of Tambo , to the west and northwest by the districts of Uchuraccay and Sivia (both in the province of Huamanga ) and to the northeast by the districts of Pichari and Kimbiri (both in the Province of La Convención ).
