The Huamanga Province is part of the Ayacucho administrative region in south-central Peru . It has an area of 2981 km². The 2017 census counted 282,194 inhabitants in the province. In 2007 the population was 221,390, in 1993 163,197. The administrative center is the city of Ayacucho (Huamanga).
Geographical location
The province of Huamanga is located in the north of the Ayacucho region. The province extends over the Andean highlands . The Río Pampas runs along the eastern provincial border . Much of the province is drained via the Río Cachi north to the Río Mantaro .
The province of Huamanga borders in the north with the province Huanta , in the east with the province La Mar and the region Apurímac . In the south are the neighboring provinces of Vilcas Huamán and Cangallo . To the west of the province lies the Huancavelica region .
Administrative division
The Huamanga Province consists of 16 districts. Ayacucho district is the seat of the provincial administration.
