The district of San José de Ticllas is located in the province of Huamanga in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was established on June 20, 1955. It has an area of ​​97.5 km². The 2017 census counted 1478 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1020, in 2007 it was 2442. The district administration is located in the 3268  m high town of San José de Ticllas (or Ticllas) with 136 inhabitants (as of 2017). San José de Ticllas is located 12 km west-northwest of the provincial and regional capital Ayacucho (Huamanga).

Geographical location

The district of San José de Ticllas is located in the Andean highlands in the central northwest of the Huamanga province. The Río Cachi forms the district boundary in the far west and northeast.

The district of San José de Ticllas borders in the northwest with the district Santiago de Pischa , in the northeast with the district Chinchos ( province Angaraes ), in the east with the district Ayacucho , in the south with the districts Socos and Vinchos and in the west with the district Santo Tomás de Pata (Province of Angarares).
