The province of Vilcas Huamán is part of the Ayacucho administrative region in southwestern Peru . The province has an area of 1178 km². The 2017 census counted 16,861 inhabitants in the province. In 2007 the population was 23,600. The administrative seat is in Vilcas Huamán .
Geographical location
The province of Vilcas Huamán is located in the east of the Ayacucho region. It extends over the Andean highlands . The province has a longitudinal extent in NNW-SSE-direction of about 60 km and an average width of about 20 km. The Río Pampas flows around the province and forms its southwest, southeast and northeast borders. The regional capital Ayacucho (Huamanga) is located 65 km north-northwest of the province.
The province of Vilcas Huamán borders the province of Huamanga to the north, the provinces Chincheros and Andahuaylas (both in the Apurímac region ) to the east, the province of Sucre to the south and the provinces of Víctor Fajardo and Cangallo to the west .
