The Carhuanca district is located in the Vilcas Huamán Province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district has an area of 54.3 km². The 2017 census counted 870 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1298, in 2007 it was 1149. The seat of the district administration is the 2960 m high village of Carhuanca with 405 inhabitants (as of 2017). Carhuanca is located 20 km southeast of the provincial capital Vilcas Huamán. 3 km southwest of Carhuanca is the archaeological site of Puntay Urqu.
Geographical location
The Carhuanca district is located in the Andean highlands in the eastern south of the Vilcas Huamán province. The Río Pampas flows east along the southern district boundary.
The Carhuanca district is bordered by the Huambalpa district to the west, the Saurama district to the north and east, and the San Antonio de Cachi ( Andahuaylas province ) and Belén ( Sucre province ) districts to the south .
