The District of Independencia ( independencia Spanish for "independence") is located in the province of Vilcas Huamán in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was established on March 12, 1986. It has an area of 88.1 km². The 2017 census counted 1213 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2068, in 2007 it was 1815. The seat of the district administration is the 2950 m high village Paccha Huallhua (also Paccchahuallhua or Nuevo Paccha Huallhua) with 460 inhabitants (as of 2017). Paccha Huallhua is located 23 km southeast of the provincial capital Vilcas Huamán .
Geographical location
The district of Independencia is located in the Andean highlands in the extreme south of the province of Vilcas Huamán. The district is surrounded by the Río Pampas . This limits the district to the west, south and east. The district measures 12 km in north-south direction and 11 km in east-west direction.
The district of Independencia is bordered to the west by the districts of Canaria and Hualla (both in the province of Víctor Fajardo ), to the north by the district of Accomarca , to the extreme northeast by the district of Chalcos and to the east and southeast by the district of Querobamba (the last two mentioned Districts belong to the province of Sucre ).
