The Huambalpa District is located in the Vilcas Huamán Province in the Ayacucho Region in south-central Peru . The district emerged in the founding years of the Republic of Peru. It has an area of ​​163 km². The 2017 census counted 1430 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2083, in 2007 it was 2212. The district administration is located in the 3262  m high village of Huambalpa with 291 inhabitants (as of 2017). Huambalpa is located 11 km southeast of the provincial capital Vilcas Huamán .

Geographical location

The district of Huambalpa is located in the Andean highlands south-central in the province of Vilcas Huamán. The longitudinal extension in WNW-ESE direction is 27 km, the maximum width is 10 km. The Río Pampas flows south-southeast along the eastern district boundary. In addition, this also runs in the southeast along the district boundary, there in the east-northeast direction.

The district of Huambalpa is bordered to the west by the districts of Cayara and Colca (both in the province of Víctor Fajardo ), to the north by the district of Vilcas Huamán , to the northeast by the district of Saurama , to the east by the district of Carhuanca , to the southeast by the Belén ( province Sucre ) and in the south to the Accomarca district .
