The Cayara District is located in the Víctor Fajardo Province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was established on January 9, 1960. It has an area of 63.5 km². The 2017 census counted 1177 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1501, in 2007 it was 1335. The district administration is located in the 3164 m high village of Cayara with 846 inhabitants (as of 2017). Cayara is just 10 km southeast of the provincial capital Huancapi .
In 1988 members of the Peruvian army murdered 31 people from the Cayara district. The act is known as the "Cayara Massacre".
Geographical location
The Cayara District is located in the Andean highlands in the northeast of the Víctor Fajardo Province. The Río Pampas flows along the northeastern district boundary towards the south-southeast.
The district of Cayara borders in the south on the district Hualla , in the west on the district Huancapi , in the north on the district Colca and in the east on the district Huambalpa ( province Vilcas Huamán ).
