The Huancapi district is located in the Víctor Fajardo Province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was founded on August 16, 1920. It has an area of ​​239 km². The 2017 census counted 1976 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2942, in 2007 it was 2400. The seat of the district and provincial administration is the 3081  m high village of Huancapi with 1820 inhabitants (as of 2017). Huancapi is located 68 km south-southeast of the regional capital Ayacucho . The archaeological site of Ñawpallaqta is about 5 km southeast of Huancapi.

Geographical location

The district of Huancapi is located in the Andean highlands in the center of the province of Víctor Fajardo. The district is located in the catchment area of the Río Pampas , which flows in the extreme north along the border to the east. The Río Huancapi crosses the east of the district in a northerly direction. The west is drained over the Río Huyllcamayo, the southwest over the Río Chumi.

The district of Huancapi borders in the southwest with the district Sacsamarca ( province Huanca Sancos ), in the west with the district Huancaraylla , in the extreme northwest with the district Alcamenca , in the extreme north with the district Cangallo ( province Cangallo ), in the northeast with the districts Colca and Cayara and in the southeast to the districts of Hualla and Canaria .
