The province of Cangallo is part of the Ayacucho administrative region in southwestern Peru . It has an area of 1916 km². The 2017 census counted 30,443 residents in the province. Ten years earlier the population was 34,902. The administrative seat is in Cangallo .
Geographical location
The province of Cangallo is in the north of the Ayacucho region. The province extends over the Andean highlands . The upper reaches of the Río Pampas (also Río Cangallo ) runs along the southern provincial border . The Río Cachi , the right tributary of the Río Mantaro, has its source in the north of the province . The province has a lengthwise extension in WNW-OSE direction of 95 km and a maximum width of 25 km. The provincial capital Cangallo is located on the south-eastern provincial border in the river valley of the Río Pampas.
The province of Cangallo borders on the province of Huamanga in the north, on the province of Vilcas Huamán in the east and on the province of Víctor Fajardo in the south . To the west of the province lies the Huancavelica region .
