The Sacsamarca district is located in the Huanca Sancos province in the Ayacucho region in south- central Peru . The district was established on November 11, 1961. It has an area of ​​641 km². The 2017 census counted 1392 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1905, in 2007 it was 1797. The seat of the district administration is the 3825  m high village of Sacsamarca with 814 inhabitants (as of 2017). Sacsamarca is 3.5 km southeast of the provincial capital Huanca Sancos .

Geographical location

The Sacsamarca district is located in the Andean highlands in the east of the Huanca Sancos province. The rivers Río Iñipallca, Río Urubamba and Río Caracha run along the western district boundary .

The Sacsamarca district borders on the Sancos district to the west, the Carapo district to the northwest , the Huancaraylla and Huancapi districts (both in the Víctor Fajardo province ) to the north and northeast, and the Canaria district (also in the Víctor province ) to the east Fajardo) and in the south to the Aucara district ( Lucanas province ).
