The Sancos district is located in the Huanca Sancos province in the Ayacucho region in south- central Peru . The district was established on June 21, 1825. It has an area of ​​1356 km². The 2017 census counted 3239 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3155, in 2007 it was 3539. The seat of the district and provincial administration is the 3408  m high town of Huanca Sancos with 3047 inhabitants (as of 2017).

Geographical location

The district of Sancos is located in the far west of the Andean highlands in the southwest of the province of Huanca Sancos. The main ridge of the Peruvian Western Cordillera with the continental divide runs along the western district border . The area is drained via the Río Caracha to the northeast to the Río Pampas .

The Sancos district borders in the south on the districts of Aucara , San Pedro de Palco , Laramate and Llauta (all four in the province of Lucanas ), in the west on the districts of Santiago de Quirahuara , Querco and Pilpichaca (all three in the province of Huaytará ), im North to the district of Santiago de Lucanamarca , in the northeast to the district of Carapo and to the east to the district of Sacsamarca .
