The Carapo district is located in the Huanca Sancos Province in the Ayacucho region in south- central Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of ​​197 km². The 2017 census counted 1916 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2624, in 2007 it was 2609. The seat of the district administration is the 3230  m high village Carapo with 435 inhabitants (as of 2017). Carapo is located 9.5 km northeast of the provincial capital Huanca Sancos .

Geographical location

The Carapo district is located in the Andean highlands in the northeast of the Huanca Sancos province. The area is drained to the north towards the Río Pampas .

The Carapo district is bordered to the east and southeast by the Sacsamarca district , to the southwest by the Sancos and Santiago de Lucanamarca districts , to the north by the Sarhua and Huamanquiquia districts (both in the Víctor Fajardo province ) and to the northeast by the Huancaraylla district ( also in the province of Víctor Fajardo).
