The Apongo district is located in the Víctor Fajardo Province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was established on May 13, 1936. It has an area of ​​176 km². The 2017 census counted 661 residents. In 1993 the population was 893, in 2007 1256. The seat of the district administration is the 3068  m high village of Apongo with 482 inhabitants (as of 2017). Apongo is 32 km south-southeast of the provincial capital Huancapi .

Geographical location

The Apongo district is located in the Andean highlands in the southeast of the Víctor Fajardo province. The Río Sondondo , the right tributary of the Río Pampas , flows north along the eastern district boundary and drains almost the entire area.

The Apongo district borders in the southwest and west with the Aucara district ( Lucanas province ), in the north with the Canaria district , and in the east and southeast with the Querobamba and Morcolla districts (both in the Sucre province ) and the Asquipata district .
