The Morcolla district is located in the Sucre Province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was established on December 21, 1956. It has an area of ​​289 km². The 2017 census counted 1311 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2052, in 2007 it was 1603. The district administration is located in the 3459  m high village of Morcolla with 521 inhabitants (as of 2017). Morcolla is located 11 km south-southwest of the provincial capital Querobamba .

Geographical location

The Morcolla district is located in the Andean highlands in the southwest of the Sucre province. The Río Sondondo flows north along the western district boundary and drains a large part of the area. The eastern part of the district is drained via the Río Huancani to the east to the Río Chicha . In the extreme southeast, the district extends to the mountain range of the 5,112  m high volcano Nevado Ccarhuarazo (alternative spellings: Ccarhuaraso, Carhuarazo).

The Morcolla district borders in the extreme southeast on the Chipao district ( Lucanas province ), in the south on the Huacaña district , in the west on the Apongo and Asquipata districts (both in the Víctor Fajardo province ), in the north on the Querobamba district and in the east the Soras district .
