The district of Santiago de Paucaray is located in the province of Sucre in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was established on May 21, 1962. It has an area of ​​61.5 km². The 2017 census counted 625 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1187, in 2007 917. The district administration is located in the 3229  m high village of Santiago de Paucaray with 215 inhabitants (as of 2017). Santiago de Paucaray is located 22 km east-southeast of the provincial capital Querobamba .

Geographical location

The district of Santiago de Paucaray is located in the Andean highlands in the east of the province of Sucre. The Río Chicha flows north along the northeastern district boundary and drains the area.

The district of Santiago de Paucaray borders in the southeast, in the south and in the southwest with the district Soras , in the extreme west with the district San Salvador de Quije , in the northwest with the district Paico and in the northeast with the districts Huayana and Pomacocha (both in the province Andahuaylas ).
