The district of Paico is located in the province of Sucre in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district emerged in the founding years of the Republic of Peru. It has an area of ​​79.3 km². The 2017 census counted 583 residents. In 1993 the population was 1076, in 2007 953. The district administration is located in the 3073  m high village of Paico with 329 inhabitants (as of 2017). Paico is located 21 km east-southeast of the provincial capital Querobamba .

Geographical location

The district of Paico is located in the Andean highlands in the east of the province of Sucre. It has a longitudinal extension in SSW-NNE direction of 13.5 km and a width of about 8.5 km. The Río Chicha flows north along the eastern district boundary and drains the area.

The district of Paico is bordered to the west and north by the district of San Salvador de Quije , to the northeast by the districts of San Miguel de Chaccrampa and Huayana (both in the province of Andahuaylas ) and to the southeast by the district of Santiago de Paucaray .
