The Huacaña district is located in the Sucre Province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district emerged in the founding years of the Republic of Peru. It has an area of ​​144 km². The 2017 census counted 390 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 522, in 2007 it was 642. The district administration is located in the 3170  m high village of Huacaña with 290 inhabitants (as of 2017). Huacaña is located about 18 km south-southwest of the provincial capital Querobamba .

Geographical location

The district of Huacaña is located in the Andean highlands in the southwest of the province of Sucre. The Río Sondondo flows north along the western district boundary and drains the area. In the extreme southeast, the district extends to the mountain range of the 5,112  m high volcano Nevado Ccarhuarazo (alternative spellings: Ccarhuaraso, Carhuarazo).

The Huacaña district borders in the south on the Chipao district ( Lucanas province ), in the southwest on the Cabana and Santa Ana de Huaycahuacho districts (both in the Lucanas province) and in the north and east on the Morcolla district .
