The Chalcos district is located in the Sucre Province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was established on March 3, 1928. It has an area of ​​54.9 km². The 2017 census counted 506 residents. In 1993 the population was 809, in 2007 721. The seat of the district administration is the 3645  m high village of Chalcos with 243 inhabitants (as of 2017). Chalcos is located 20 km north-northeast of the provincial capital Querobamba .

Geographical location

The Chalcos district is located in the Andean highlands in the north of the Sucre province. The district is bordered in the west by the Río Pampas flowing north , and in the east by its tributary Río Chicha , which flows north .

The Chalcos district is bordered by the Chilcayoc district to the southeast, the Querobamba district to the southwest, the Independencia and Accomarca districts to the west (both in the Vilcas Huamán province ), the Belén district to the north and the San Antonio de district to the east Cachi ( Andahuaylas Province ).
