The Soras district is located in the Sucre Province in the Ayacucho region in south-central Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of ​​352 km². The 2017 census counted 1059 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1012, in 2007 it was 1236. The seat of the district administration is the 3462  m high village of Soras with 938 inhabitants (as of 2017). Soras is located 27 km east-southeast of the provincial capital Querobamba .

Geographical location

The Soras district is located in the Andean highlands in the center of the Sucre province. The Río Chicha (also Río Soras) flows north along the northeastern district boundary. The south of the district is drained by the Río Huancani and Río Larcay to the Río Chicha. In the extreme southwest rises the 5112  m high volcano Nevado Ccarhuarazo (alternative spellings: Ccarhuaraso, Carhuarazo).

The Soras district borders on the Morcolla district to the west , the Querobamba , San Salvador de Quije and Santiago de Paucaray districts to the north, the Pomacocha and Pampachiri districts (both in the Andahuaylas province ) to the northeast, and the to the east and southeast District of San Pedro de Larcay and in the south to the district of Chipao ( province of Lucanas ).
