The Pomacocha district is located in the Andahuaylas province in the Apurímac region in the central south of Peru . The district was established on August 21, 1963. It has an area of ​​123 km². The 2017 census counted 911 residents. In 1993 the population was 955, in 2007 it was 972. The district administration is located in the 3643  m high village of Pomacocha with 659 inhabitants (as of 2017). Pomacocha is 52 km southwest of the provincial capital Andahuaylas .

Geographical location

The Pomacocha district is located in the Andean highlands in the southwest of the Andahuaylas province. The Río Chicha (also Río Soras) flows north along the western district boundary.

The Pomacocha district is bordered to the west by the Soras and Santiago de Paucaray districts (both in the Sucre province ), to the northwest by the Huayana district , to the north by the Tumay Huaraca district , to the east by the Capaya district ( Aymaraes province ) and to the south to the Pampachiri district .
