The Huancarama district is located in the Andahuaylas province in the Apurímac region in south-central Peru . The district was established on January 19, 1944. It has an area of ​​156 km². The 2017 census counted 5454 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 7432, in 2007 it was 7078. The district administration is located in the 2965  m high small town of Huancarama with 2295 inhabitants (as of 2017). Huancarama is just 33 km east of the provincial capital Andahuaylas .

Geographical location

The Huancarama district is located in the Andean highlands in the far east of the Andahuaylas province. The rivers Río Pampas , Río Apurímac and Río Pachachaca delimit the district in the northwest, north and northeast.

The district of Huancarama borders in the southwest on the district Kishuara , in the northwest on the district Pacobamba , in the extreme north on the district Huanipaca , in the northeast on the district Abancay and in the south on the district Pichirhua . The last three districts mentioned are in the province of Abancay .
