The Tumay Huaraca district is located in the Andahuaylas province in the Apurímac region in central southern Peru . The district was established on December 29, 1964. It has an area of ​​453 km². The 2017 census counted 1065 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2016, in 2007 it was 2144. The district administration is located in the 3369  m high village of Umamarca with 538 inhabitants (as of 2017). Umamarca is 48 km south-southwest of the provincial capital Andahuaylas .

Geographical location

The Tumay Huaraca district is located in the Andean highlands in the south of the Andahuaylas province. The area is drained to the west to the Río Chicha (also Río Soras).

The district of Tumay Huaraca borders in the northwest on the districts Huayana and Chiara , in the north on the districts Huancaray and Turpo , in the northeast on the district Andahuaylas , in the east on the districts Colcabamba , Toraya and Capaya (all three in the province of Aymaraes ) and in South to the Pomacocha district .
