The province of Aymaraes is one of seven provinces in the Apurímac administrative region in southern Peru . The province name is derived from the indigenous people of the Aymara .

The province extends over an area of ​​4213 km². The 2017 census counted 24,307 inhabitants in the province of Aymaraes. Ten years earlier the population was 29,569. The provincial capital is Chalhuanca .

Geographical location

The province of Aymaraes extends over the mountains north of the Cordillera Huanzo mountain range . The middle reaches of the Río Pachachaca and its left tributary Río Chalhuanca flow through the province in a northerly direction.

The province of Aymaraes borders in the west and northwest on the province Andahuaylas , in the northeast on the province Grau , in the southeast on the Antabamba and in the south on the Ayacucho region .
